Abstract
3D printing of cementitious materials is an innovative and smart construction method known for its ability to optimize construction time, cost, design flexibility, waste reduction, precision, and safety. However, the 3D printing of cement-based materials (CBMs) necessitates a careful equilibrium between pumpability, buildability, and rheology of the mixes, which is best achieved by incorporating engineered nanomaterials in the mixture. Therefore, this review article delves into the effect of nanomaterials on both the fresh and hardened properties of 3D printable CBMs, along with their maximum and optimum dosage in mixtures so far. Findings indicate that nanomaterials function as thickeners, contributing to improved thixotropic behavior and structural development in 3D printable CBMs. Furthermore, they promote the hydration process by offering nucleation sites, thereby refining the microstructure of CBMs. Nano silica (NS) stands out for its significant impact on the thixotropy of 3D printable mixes, while carbon-based nanomaterials enhance the physio-mechanical properties of 3D printable CBMs. In addition, nano TiO2(NT) imparts self-cleaning capabilities through photocatalysis while cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) and nano clay (NC) find their primary utility as viscosity-modifying agents within the 3D printable mixture. Thus, this comprehensive review serves as an invaluable resource for researchers, engineers, and industry professionals seeking insights into the latest advancements and confronting the key challenges within the realm of 3D printing for cementitious materials.
