Abstract
Additive manufacturing (AM), more commonly called three-dimensional (3D) printing, is a rising technology in the civil construction industry. The technique develops the 3D structures rapidly with little personnel, minimal resources, and reduces waste production. However, 3D printing is less explored in building and construction than in aerospace, automobile, and medical applications. This chapter provides an argument for the potential role of AM in building and construction applications. Furthermore, the chapter also provides insights into existing and novel materials and discusses ideal material properties for AM in building structures. The research progress and future of digitalizing construction techniques are systematically reported, and the conclusions will be helpful for designers and civil engineers to recognise the AM implications for minimising cost and time.
