Abstract

Recent developments in the construction industry address the adaptation of additive manufacturing technology to simplify the manufacturing complexity of structures prioritizing sustainability. The use of additive manufacturing has enabled the creation of complex, custom architectural and structural elements with calibrated efficiency, providing freedom of design, faster construction, fabrication, and prototyping. In the scope of these advantages, recent studies have prioritized using concrete in additive manufacturing for its strength and durability. However, using concrete in 3D printing raises significant environmental concerns due to its high carbon footprint. In response to these challenges, researchers have developed various techniques and strategies to integrate bio-based materials such as hemp and wood powder in 3D printing technology. By synthesizing findings from diverse research articles, this research establishes a comparison of the use of concrete and bio-based materials in additive manufacturing when employed in facade applications. This paper comprehensively reviews the use of concrete and bio-based materials in additive manufacturing, examining key aspects of material properties, including mechanical performance and global warming potential. 3D-printed concrete has the highest compressive strength as compared to Hempcrete 3D-printed walls and 3DP Biowalls, however, it has the highest environmental impact.
