Investigation of Out-of-Plane Bending Behaviour of 3D-Printed Reinforced and Unreinforced Walls (2025-10)¶

Abstract
In this study, the influence of reinforcing bars inside the 3D-printed wall and the geometry of the 3D-printed wall on the out-of-plane bending characteristics were investigated. In total, a reinforced 3D-printed wall and an unreinforced 3Dprinted wall of dimensions 2.004 m height× 0.85 m width× 0.16 m thickness were constructed and tested using four-point bending tests. In general, the reinforced 3D-printed wall exhibited greater load-carrying capacity, higher stiffness, and greater ductility compared to the unreinforced 3D-printed wall. Both the reinforced and unreinforced walls demonstrated ductile behavior which can be observed from their respective load-deflection curves. The ductile response observed in the unreinforced wall can be attributed to the geometric configuration of the printed wall including the internal truss, and grouted core. For both types of walls, the initiation of cracks occurred at the interfaces between the printed concrete layers. Later, the cracks propagated along these layer interfaces.
