Abstract

As climate extremes intensify and housing energy inequality deepens, particularly across the Global South, there is an urgent need for design strategies that respond to environmental conditions and guide emerging construction technologies. This study introduces Climatomorphism as a generative framework for the performance- based adaptation of architectural form via data-driven methods. Applied through an optimization workflow for 3D-printed concrete free-form housing, the study is grounded in newly afforded geometric freedoms of additive construction. The methodology integrates parametric modeling, environmental simulation, and evolutionary multi- objective optimization (EMO) to minimize thermal discomfort and annual heating and cooling demand. It develops three innovations: (i) a seamlessly integrated generative– simulation–optimization workflow; (ii) a climate-oriented application of Metaball logic to control form compactness and regularity; and (iii) cardinal panelization enabling EMO-driven window-to-wall ratios and shading for free-form housing. A 75m2 housing model is tested across three Köppen climate zones in Chile, revealing emerging morphological adaptations.
