Abstract

This study explores locust bean gum (LBG), a biopolymer stabilizer, to improve the rheological and mechanical properties of earth-based concrete, addressing the need for sustainable and low-carbon construction materials. Microstructural analysis revealed strong binding between LBG and clay particles through a significant mass loss difference between pure kaolinite and kaolinite-LBG washed sample. Rheological investigations demonstrated the ability of LBG to increase yield stress. Notably, the yield stress of the clay suspension increased continuously with LBG concentration. For example, adding 3 % LBG to the mixture increased the static yield stress from 54.5 Pa to 340 Pa, more than a sixfold increase. Finally, the compressive strength tests revealed that a mere 3 % addition of LBG led to around a 13-fold increase in compressive strength, i.e., 0.67 MPa to 8.70 MPa. This exploration highlights the pivotal role of LBG as a dual-functionality agent, acting as a robust binder and a promising rheology modifier, thereby revolutionizing sustainable construction practices reliant on earth-based materials.
