Abstract
Additive manufacturing has evolved from small-scale prototyping with thermoplastics to large-format construction using concrete. This growth has been notable in developed regions for building houses and architectural structures. However, research on 3D printing in remote and crisis areas remains limited. This study explores the feasibility of using 3D printing with adobe for constructing temporary housing in such scenarios. Adobe’s natural, locally sourced qualities reduce reliance on complex supply chains and minimize environmental impact. It offers a rapid, low-effort solution with minimal manpower, enabling swift deployment and reduced energy consumption. Challenges include transportability, ease of setup, and maintenance of printers. This paper introduces a ranking system to evaluate four printer types – portal, delta, polar, and robotic arm-based on transportability, modularity, maintainability, energy demand, and cost. The evaluation system aims to identify the most suitable 3D printer type for creating environmentally friendly, temporary housing with adobe in crisis or remote environments.
