Abstract
Earthen materials have long been employed in vernacular architecture worldwide due to their local availability, abundance, costeffectiveness, and thermal efficiency. However, their use has widely been progressively abandoned, replaced by industrialised materials that are easier to use and have higher resistance, yet are highly energy-consuming (Minke, 2006). 3D printing technology with earth opens the possibility to reintroduce this sustainable material with a contemporary approach. This paper explores the application of vernacular knowledge to 3D printed earth architecture. In this investigation, we analyse three 3D printing architectural prototypes that integrate traditional knowledge in earth construction. The case studies are sorted through one of the three shaping factors of vernacular architecture suggested by Amos Rapoport in his book “House Form and Culture”: Constructive response / Climatic response / Social response. Finally, this paper assesses the value of adapting vernacular techniques in 3D printing and proposes further steps for their integration into robotic construction.
