Abstract

Reinforced concrete is regarded as the all-purpose weapon of modern construction: no other load-bearing building material is as malleable and has similarly good sound and fire protection properties. The book "Reinforced Structures: Reinforced Concrete Structures" illustrates this versatility with around 20 building examples and specialist articles from the fields of structural and civil engineering. Detailed project descriptions and numerous detailed drawings make the design and construction process of halls, bridges, railroad stations and office buildings comprehensible. The contributions from research and practice also portray a building material in transition: due to increased ecological and technical requirements, digital planning methods and ever more efficient concrete mixtures, reinforced concrete today has little in common with the material used by the pioneers of reinforced concrete construction 80 or 100 years ago. At the same time, the reinforced concrete buildings of earlier decades form a legacy whose renovation and maintenance still keeps us on our toes today. The book also takes a critical look at the handling of this building fabric.
